AI Overviews Are Rewriting Search: How to Stay Visible in the AI-Search Era

For twenty years, SEO meant one thing: rank high enough in a list of ten blue links to earn a click. That model is breaking. AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and similar tools now answer a growing share of queries directly, synthesising information from multiple sources into a single response - often without the searcher ever visiting a website.

This isn't a reason to panic, but it is a reason to change how you think about visibility. The brands that show up inside AI answers today are the ones who adapted their content strategy early. Here's the framework we use with clients.

Why traditional SEO tactics fall short now

Ranking #1 in classic search doesn't guarantee inclusion in an AI Overview. These systems pull from content that is easy to extract, unambiguous, and structured around a clear answer - not necessarily the page with the most backlinks. Keyword-stuffed, marketing-heavy copy is exactly the kind of content AI systems tend to skip over in favour of clearer, more direct sources.

A practical framework for AI-search visibility

1. Lead with the answer, then explain it

Structure key pages so the direct answer to the implied question appears in the first two to three sentences, followed by supporting detail, context and nuance. AI systems - and impatient humans - both reward this structure.

2. Build content around entities, not just keywords

AI-search systems reason about entities (people, products, concepts and how they relate) more than they match exact keyword strings. Be explicit about what your product or service is, what category it belongs to, and how it compares to alternatives - don't make an AI model infer it.

3. Make extraction easy

Use real headings (not just bold text), genuine bullet and numbered lists, and short paragraphs. Add FAQ sections with the actual questions your customers ask, phrased the way they'd ask them. Structured, well-marked-up content is disproportionately more likely to be quoted.

4. Back claims with first-party proof

Original data, case studies, and named examples are harder for AI systems to dismiss as generic marketing copy - and they're exactly the kind of specific, citable detail these systems favour when constructing an answer.

5. Track AI referral traffic separately

Segment referral traffic from chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai and Google's AI Overview surfaces in your analytics. This traffic behaves differently (often higher intent, lower volume) and treating it as noise means missing an increasingly important channel.

What to stop doing

  • Writing thin, keyword-stuffed pages purely to rank - they rarely get cited and increasingly rank poorly too
  • Burying the actual answer under paragraphs of preamble
  • Treating AI-search visibility as a future problem - the shift is already showing up in traffic data for most industries

AI-search readiness isn't a separate discipline from good SEO - it's what good SEO looks like now: clear, well-structured, genuinely useful content that answers real questions. Brands that make this shift early will have an advantage that compounds; brands that wait will be optimising for a search landscape that no longer exists.
